Promoting student creativity, problem solving and risk taking through the innovative use of technology
Why is the district tackling this now? The District is required by the state of Illinois to complete a Technology Plan every 3 years. With our Technology Plan due, we are taking the opportunity to create a comprehensive 3-year Technology Plan for District 181.
Will the committee’s Technology Plan be about more than student computers? Yes, the committee’s recommendation will include any changes to the District’s replacement cycle along with infrastructure and professional development (training) needs. The committee will also be looking at other technology that improves student learning, such as interactive whiteboards, response systems (clickers) or classroom sound systems.
Is the committee considering a 1:1 program where every student has a computer? Yes, the committee is considering whether a 1:1 program would be good for our students educationally. We are also considering things like increasing the number of computers available to each school, or allowing students to bring their own technology (BYOT) to school.
If the district begins a 1:1 program will computers or iPads be used? The committee will first decide whether a 1:1 program is educationally beneficial to District 181 students before selecting a device. However, MacBook Airs and iPads are being considered.
What about Netbooks? Netbooks, while inexpensive, might not make a good choice for our schools due to their lack of durability, limited battery life and limited functionality for creating multimedia.
What exactly is a BYOT program? In a Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) program each student is encouraged to bring any device they already own and use it at school such as an iPod Touch, Smartphone or laptop. Students that do not already own a device would use a District-provided device during the school day. This program has the advantage of low costs for the District but may pose challenges for classroom teachers.
Is the District’s financial position being considered in the committee's discussions? While the committee’s focus is to make the best recommendation educationally for students we are keeping the financial reality in mind. Dr. Troy Whalen, Assistant Superintendent for Business, is a member of the committee and will assure that all financial concerns are considered.
